Description

What is measured
Using an established immunological technique, this test measures immunoglobulin E (IgE) specific to 44 food triggers. IgE reaction is known as a “true allergy” and there is an immediate response (seconds to hours) after exposure. Allergies can persist for a long period or a lifetime due to B-memory cells in the bone marrow.

What is Immunoglobulin E (IgE)?
IgE is a type of antibody found only in mammals and is produced by your immune system. When you have an allergic reaction to a trigger (food or inhalant like pollen), it is due to IgE production (immune system overreacting to a non-harmful antigen).

Cross-Reactivity
Although each type of IgE has its own “radar” for each type of allergen, many food reactions occur due to cross-reactions between food and pollen. Cross-reactivity occurs when the immune system identifies the proteins in one substance (food) and the proteins in another (pollen) as similar and the immune system reacts in the same way.

Food allergy symptoms vary in terms of reactions. Some may suffer from very minor symptoms, while others may experience a severe reaction. This test is not meant to be taken by anyone who already suffers from severe allergic reactions to any food listed on this test. If you are experiencing severe allergic reactions, please seek medical attention right away.

Symptoms include:

  • Tingling or itching in the mouth
  • A raised, itchy red rash
  • Abdominal pain
  • Swelling of mouth, lips, and eyes

More severe cases can include:

  • Swelling of the throat, resulting in difficulty breathing
  • Persistent dizziness or collapse
  • Stomach pain, bloating, vomiting, or diarrhea

Please note, testing alone cannot be used to diagnose a food allergy. Your healthcare provider will be able to use these results, as well as a mix of your medical history, family history, and additional information to properly diagnose any food allergy you may be under suspicion of.

If you believe you are experiencing severe, unusual, or worsening symptoms, please contact your health care provider immediately.
